Critical Velocities for Rocket Sled Excitation of Rail Resonance

چکیده
he rocket sled test facility at the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico provides a unique and valuable test venue for evaluating advanced missile technology at representative flight velocities. Recent failures at the facility underscore the inherent high-risk nature of supersonic sled tests and undermine their potential value to missile development programs. This article addresses one potential cause for some of the observed failures. A periodic structure model of the Holloman test track rail and observed sled response characteristics show that a rocket sled can directly cause the rail to resonate for certain critical sled velocities. The theory is experimentally verified via time–frequency analysis of accelerometer data acquired during sled tests performed for the Navy’s Standard Missile-2 and the Army’s Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile programs. Both tests culminated in a fractured rail and mission failure. (

Post-critical Behavior of Three- dimensional Composite Beams Near the Autoparametric Resonance under Flapwise Excitation
The bifurcation analysis of a composite beam subjected to harmonic flapwise base excitation is studied when the ratio of flapwise and chordwise internal resonances is 1:2. Results are obtained by the numerical solution of modulation equations. Chracteristics of the response are investigated in terms of time history, phase portraits diagrams and bifurcation diagram of poincare maps. It is observ...
متن کاملStabilization of Electrostatically Actuated Micro-pipe Conveying Fluid Using Parametric Excitation
This paper investigates the parametric excitation of a micro-pipe conveying fluid suspended between two symmetric electrodes. Electrostatically actuated micro-pipes may become unstable when the exciting voltage is greater than the pull-in value. It is demonstrated that the parametric excitation of a micro-pipe by periodic (ac) voltages may have a stabilizing effect and permit an increase of the...

A review of recent and historical work in the field of transonic and supersonic ground effect aerodynamics has been conducted, focussing on applied research on wings and aircraft, present and future ground transportation, projectiles, rocket sleds and other related bodies which travel in close ground proximity in the compressible regime. Methods for ground testing are described and evaluated, n...
متن کاملRail Movement and Ground Waves Caused by High-speed Trains Approaching Track-soil Critical Velocities
During the last decade Railways have become one of the most advanced and fast developing branches of transportation technology. The reason is very high speeds achievable by the most advanced modern trains (French TGV, German ICE, Italian Pendolino, Swedish X2000, Spanish AVE, Belgium Thalys, the Eurostar) and very low air pollution per passenger compared with road vehicles. Unfortunately, the i...

Lethality evaluation tests of anti-armor missile systems require flight-test of tactical missiles against threat targets under highly controlled impact conditions. Variables such as terminal dive angle, impact velocity, missile orientation at impact, hit-point on the target, and shot-line through the target all must be carefully controlled and documented to properly evaluate and analyze the dam...
